Geospatial Cloud Computing #1: The Basics

Overview:

What is Cloud Computing? What are the platforms? What are the business models and costs? Is it secure? You have many questions…We have the answers. This panel will discuss software as a service (SaaS), virtualization, and how to scale web services for organizations. Panelists will include representatives from ESRI, Google, GeoEye, and the OGC.

Dr. Carl Reed, CTO, OGC: Carl is currently the Chief Technology Officer and an Executive Director of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC). The OGC is an international standards organization that is leading the development of standards for geospatial and location based services. Reed’s responsibilities include facilitation of the OGC standards process, chairing the OGC Planning Committee and Architecture Board, and tracking future market and technology trends that impact standards development.

Mano Marks, Geo Developer Advocate, Google: Mano joined Google's Geo API team in 2006. He helps people all over the world develop and deploy their content in KML and Google Maps, working with large companies, small startups, and international aid organizations. Before coming to Google, Mano had an eclectic career that involved getting a Masters in History, a Masters in Information Management and Systems, and working as a data manager in small and mid-sized organizations for over a decade.

Joel Campbell, Senior Director of Product Management ,GeoEye: Joel Campbell joined GeoEye in the summer of 2007 as the Senior Director of Product Management, responsible for product innovation, management, pricing, positioning and marketing. Joel has nearly 20 years of experience in all aspects of business development in the geospatial services profession. Most recently he served as Vice President and General Manger of Definiens, Inc. Definiens is a German software company specializing in image analysis in addition to previously serving as the Director of US sales for ESRI, the world’s leading GIS software provider.. Joel has also operated his own consulting firm focused on business development and sales training for companies in the Geospatial industry. Joel has been a feature speaker, lecturer and trainer for many GIS organizations around the world.

Victoria Kouyoumjian, IT Strategy Architect, ESRI: Victoria has been with ESRI for 14 years and, after several years managing the development and production of software products in Product Management, she now works as the IT Strategy Architect in the Technical Marketing Division of ESRI, focusing on emerging technologies, disrupters, and trends. Victoria holds an MBA and is co-author of The Business Benefits of GIS: An ROI Approach.

Tom Citriniti has been with Pitney Bowes Business Insight for 12 years. He has been a development lead for MapInfo Professional, and one of the main architects for MapXtreme 2008. Tom is currently a Product Evangelist and spends his time conveying how best to utilize PBBI products in enterprise solutions. Tom has a Masters Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he taught a 3D visualization course. Tom specializes in distributed architectures and enterprise spatial applications.

Philip O'Doherty has been Chief Executive Officer of eSpatial since 2003. Philip has led the company’s focus on web GIS solutions and provided the vision for the company’s launch of a fully functional SaaS GIS solution. Philip joined eSpatial from private equity investment firm, International Investment & Underwriting (IIU). Prior to IIU he was Group Finance Manager at Dublin Airport Authority. Philip has over 30 years’ business experience across a diverse set of industries. Philip is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants has a Masters in Finance from Dublin City University, an MSc in Management Practice from Trinity College Dublin and has completed a one-year Stanford Leadership for Growth program.

Paul Bissett is the co-founder and CEO of WeoGeo, Inc., a company focused on managing and monetizing your digital mapping assets. WeoGeo's products include WeoGeo Market (www.WeoGeo.com), a one-stop geo-content marketplace, and WeoGeo Server (Server.WeoGeo.com), a network appliance for the archival, discovery, and delivery of an enterprise's geo-content. Paul has also founded and served as the Executive Director of the Florida Environmental Research Institute (FERI). For the past nine years, FERI has been at the nexus of basic and applied remote sensing and computational science. Bissett received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Marine Science from the University of South Florida, a CFA from the Institute of Charter Financial Analysts, and a B.S. in Finance and Economics from the University of Florida. He is an author on nearly 40 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of oceanography and remote sensing

David Sonnen: Dave Sonnen is a Contributing Editor at Directions Magazine, and President, Integrated Spatial Solutions, Inc. He founded Integrated Spatial Solutions, Inc. in 1991. The company provides market development and software design to the spatial information management industry. He has been involved in the SIM marketplace for more than 30 years and has been IDC’s senior consultant for spatial information management since 1991. His Spatial Information Management reports are widely regarded as the industry’s most accurate and influential thought leadership and economic information. His experiences include the design, implementation, management and marketing of spatial and other large-scale information systems. Before founding ISSI, he held senior positions in both commercial and government organizations. He also has extensive experience in design of large distributed database systems.

Dr. Moe Z. Win, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Moe Win is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining MIT, he was at AT&T Research Laboratories for five years and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for seven years. His research over the last two decades encompasses developing fundamental theory, designing algorithms, and conducting experimentation for a broad range of real-world problems. Professor Win is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and elected Fellow of the IEEE, cited for “contributions to wideband wireless transmission.” He was honored with the IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award (2006), an IEEE Technical Field Award for “pioneering contributions to ultra-wide band communications science and technology.”

Together with students and colleagues, his papers have received several awards including the IEEE Communications Society’s Guglielmo Marconi Best Paper Award (2008) and the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society’s Sergei A. Schelkunoff Transactions Prize Paper Award (2003). His other recognitions include the Laurea Honoris Causa from the University of Ferrara, Italy (2008), the Technical Recognition Award of the IEEE ComSoc Radio Communications Committee (2008), Wireless Educator of the Year Award (2007), the Fulbright Fellowship (2004), the U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2004), and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2003).

Mr. Carl Stuekerjuergen, is currently the Director of the Management Office for Enabling GEOINT (eGEOINT), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and has served in a number of senior executive management positions within the Intelligence Community (IC). Mr. Stuekerjuergen has nearly 30 years of DOD and IC experience and is widely known and recognized as an expert in analytic methods tradecraft—particularly GEOINT tradecraft.

Ken Snyder, CEO and President, PlaceMatters, Denver, Colorado, USA Creating Sustainable Communities
Ken is a nationally recognized expert on a broad range of technical and non-technical tools for community design and decision-making. Ken is the current Chair of the American Planning Association's Technology Division and sits on the Board of the National Charrette Institute.

Prior to working for PlaceMatters, Ken worked for the Orton Family Foundation, heading up their Planning Tools Program. Ken also worked for the US Department of Energy as a Community Development Program Specialist. In 2000, he served as co-chair of a committee on information and tools for the White House's Livability Council, developing policy recommendations for the Clinton-Gore report on Building Livable Communities. In 2001, he was selected as a German Marshall Fund Environmental Fellow where he traveled to Europe to study professional peer approaches to land use and transportation planning.

From 1988-1991, he worked for the National Audubon Society where he traveled internationally representing Audubon at international negotiations on climate change. Building on this experience, he organized and taught a graduate level course on International Environmental Negotiations while at Yale. He has a double degree from Oberlin College in Biology and Environmental Studies and a Master's Degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in Conservation and Development.

Dr. Feldman is the CEO of Space-Time Insight, specializing in 3D, real-time geospatial analysis of a utility's operating status overlaid on satellite imagery for fast, intuitive action. Formerly the Senior Vice President of Strategy at Virsa Systems, he joined SAP Labs as a Sr. Vice President in the Product & Technology Group, after negotiating the sale of Virsa to SAP. Earlier, he was a partner and global practice leader for merger and acquisition consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers. As president of the Rubicon Group, and later Rubicon Pacific Trading, , he specialized in transactions between the US and Asia. A frequently quoted speaker, his best-selling book on accelerating business transitions, "Five Frogs on a Log", has sold over 61,000 copies in six languages.

Mapping Renewable Energy Resources and Infrastructure Dave Skiles, Renewable Energy Geographic Information Advisor, Colorado Governor’s Energy Office, Denver, Colorado, USA
Dave is the renewable energy geographic Information advisor to the Colorado Governor’s Energy Office authoring GIS analysis for Colorado Senate Bill 91 Renewable Energy Report in 2007 and for the Renewable Energy Development Infrastructure Report in 2009. Dave has managed geographic information systems projects since 1987. His work included implementation of GIS in both the United States and international locations. Dave managed the Denver Smart Places project and created enterprise GIS systems for the JFK and Los Angeles World Airports. Dave directed regional geographic information services for ESRI and, in 2006, implemented the land holdings management GIS for Petrotrin in Trinidad-Tobago. In 2009, Dave assisted development of international work environment strategies for Sun Microsystems.

Dave is the GIS program coordinator for Front Range Community College and Red Rocks Community College, providing GIS certificate programs at both schools. He is a GISCI certified Geographic Information Systems Professional.

Dave is a military veteran with Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado and Master of Management Science degree from Regis University in Denver.
