Enterprise System Architecture - Presented by Oracle
Location information is ubiquitous; it can be found across all lines of business, all industries, and in virtually every organization and department in the world. However, as ever-present as location information seems to be, we are seldom able to share the same location information across current applications, platforms and systems as there are few location-based standards supported by all. On the other hand, there are some standards that most (if not all) applications, platforms and systems alike do tend to support, SQL and XML, which can be ideal interfaces to location data, whether map-based or not.
With the introduction of Oracle Locator, Spatial, MapViewer and Location-based Services, Oracle provides a complete platform for managing location data and interoperating with location data via common business intelligence tools. Through Oracle Spatial and Oracle Locator, geographic and location data are managed in a native type within Oracle Database 10g, which is easily queried using standard SQL with location operators and functions.
- Oracle Locator is a free feature of Oracle Database 10g Standard and Enterprise Editions that provides core location functionality needed by most customer applications to support a variety of business intelligence and 3rd party GIS solutions.
- Oracle Spatial is an option for Oracle Enterprise Edition that provides advanced spatial features to support analytics for high-end business intelligence, GIS and LBS solutions.
- Oracle MapViewer is free feature of the Oracle Application Server, Java, Standard, and Enterprise editions. Oracle MapViewer is a J2EE servlet for rendering maps using spatial data managed by Oracle Locator and/or Spatial. MapViewer provides services and tools that hide the complexity of spatial data queries and cartographic rendering, while providing customizable options for more advanced users. MapViewer is designed to integrate with business intelligence systems, Location-Based services and applications.
